Batticaloa teaching hospital

Wards pulled from the smoky air where launderers behind were persecuted

The cycle park where motorbikes rest under shade and bicycles stride a drainage

Staircases wide and mostly empty where crowds gather in dense waiting areas

Fans and canisters of food, beds aligned and patients half saronged, half bare

Sitting atop sheets the atmosphere is thick with anticipation but redolent of normal life

Outside the buses and tuktuks in the heat moving women and families after visiting 

The leafy street, the bend and curve of the dipping road that traverses the island

Thick walls that allow air, that encourage air, that sublimate comfort from distress
